PadraigC Have only listened to the first track and was only 30 seconds into it when I decided to buy the album.
I love the pent energy up in the sound of the tape - its like its trying to break free, snap, escape!! Favorite track: The Recoton High Bias From Rushville, Illinois: Side 1.

Here's something I've tried doing a handful of times over the years but this is the first time I was happy with the result.

Anyone who has any experience playing cassettes has surely run into those old cassettes that squeal and struggle to play in the deck, yet somehow still do. Sometimes the squealing can get quite intense. I'd always hoped to find a blank tape with a really compelling hiss that also struggled and squealed as such so that I could mic the tape deck as it struggled to play the tape and layer it over the sound of the tape hiss. Pretty simple. I thought this was was going to be more minimalist than it turned out to be, during the tests it was just offering the occasional lovely tone that would shift pitches which I thought offered a lovely counterpoint to the mysteriously oceanic tape hiss sighs. I was pleasantly surprised when several minutes in things were blossoming in some much busier than anticipated directions, by the end we wind up damn near in Harsh Noise territory (capital H, capital N).

Disappointingly, but also beautifully, Side 2 didn't squeal at all.
